Tools of the Trade: social browsers, microblogs

Dear Reader:

I recently asked at some of my groups if IM'ing reduced workplace interruptions, adding to work efficiency or decreasing it, citing this study: http://tinyurl.com/59tk4h (2007).

One person responded, "it's not just ADHD people who lose focus with IM, texts and pings twirl or tweetdeck, but all of us suffer. A recent Wall Street Journal article on the topic shows it takes 30 minutes to get back on task after ANY interruption.

That said, IM is a valuable tool, used wisely can aid productivity and connectivity not hinder it."

I so agree and have been testing this through the use of some microblogging tools, social browsers and even mailtags (see earlier post (8/19) on this).

Yours truly,
eSpectator
